It all began when her daughter wanted a cat. To show she was ready, she started volunteering at Kossuth Tails of Hope. Before long, Laura found herself right alongside her—helping with weekly chores, lending a hand and, eventually, becoming deeply involved in the rescue’s mission. What started as support for her daughter quickly grew into a passion of her own.
Today, Laura serves as volunteer coordinator for Kossuth Tails of Hope, an animal rescue located just west of Algona. In her role, she keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes—connecting with volunteers, organizing training and managing schedules and shift changes. It’s a lot of work, but for Laura, it’s well worth it.
“There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work,” she says. “The cats can make any day brighter and seeing them find their forever homes is very rewarding!”
While Tails of Hope is dedicated to helping keep unwanted cats off the streets, Laura is quick to point out that their impact wouldn’t be possible without strong community support. Monthly bake sales help cover utilities, and donations ensure the cats receive the care they need.
“Taking care of animals in need takes care of our greater community,” Laura shares.
Outside of her volunteer work, Laura stays busy in her professional life as well. She is a loan assistant in the residential real estate department at Iowa State Bank, where she has worked for nearly two years. Even then, her commitment to giving back doesn’t stop. She also volunteers with the Algona Vocal and Instrumental Promoters (VIPs) and will soon step into the role of vice president, helping support music programs in the Algona Community School District.
For Laura, volunteering is more than just lending a hand—it’s about connection, compassion and making a difference. And she hopes others will join her. Kossuth Tails of Hope is always looking for volunteers to help continue their important work.
