Part 3: Find Something New to Do!

Summer can be a time of uncertain expenses with school-aged children in many activities that can burn up your budget in a hurry with unplanned meals, snacks and travel expenses. Your summer can still be full of family fun with a few money-savings tips.

Finding something new to do doesn't have to mean spending a lot of money. Look around your hometown and consider the following:
  • Have you ever visited your local historical or art museum? -- You may have lived in a community for many years, but never taken the time to explore a local museum. These venues are usually hosted by volunteer docents who are extremely dedicated to their local interests! Their enthusiasm is contagious, and the cost of admission is usually quite low.
  • Visit your local library or find a free little library in your community. -- Chances are, your community has a public library. Take advantage fo these resources that bo beyond books. Your local library may offer toys and puzzles for check-out, and many offer programming for all ages. As the old adage says, "Check it out!" In addition, many communities are creating free little libraries. These book cupboards on a stake can be found in parks, school, or near church or community centers. They offer free books for your enjoyment. When you're finished, you can donate the book back to the free little library -- and consider adding another one from your collection to it!
  • Visit your local farmer's market for food, fun and crafts.
  • Community celebrations and county fairs -- Nearly ever small town in Iowa hosts a community celebration of some sort during the summer -- sweet corn days, strawberry days, Nordic fest -- the list is endless! Find our what's happening in your community. With ninety-nine counties in Iowa, you won't have to travel far to find a county fair. Many counties offer free admission or low cost admissions, and there is usually a pie stand!
